Bonus points (QR & combo)
On Score and Score (Free Start and Finish) courses, in addition to the points for visiting spots, you can sometimes earn bonus points that the organizer has prepared. There are two kinds of bonus points.
| Type | How to earn | Eligible courses |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus QR | Scan a bonus QR code during play (you do it yourself) | Score / Score (Free Start and Finish) |
| Combo Bonus | Added automatically when you visit at least the required number of specified checkpoints (no action needed) | Score / Score (Free Start and Finish) |
In both cases, once earned the points are added to your total score and reflected in the ranking. You can check the bonuses you earned in the score breakdown on the results screen (Results and Route Review — Score breakdown).
:::note Courses and events that are not eligible Bonus points are a feature for score-type courses (Score / Score (Free Start and Finish)). You cannot earn them on Fixed Order (formerly Point) courses or Walk courses. They are also unavailable in permanent events with no time limit. :::
Bonus QR (points by scanning)
Bonus QR is a mechanism where you earn bonus points by scanning a bonus-only QR code that the organizer has issued during play. It is used, for example, in area-touring events where sponsor shops present the QR code only to participants who meet certain conditions.
:::info This is different from a spot's punch QR Bonus QR is a different feature from QR Code Punch, which records that you passed a spot (checkpoint) on the map. Bonus QR codes are not shown on the map, and scanning one does not add a visit record (punch). Only the points are added. :::
How to earn
- Start playing on a score-type course (you can only scan between start and finish).
- Scan the Bonus QR presented by the organizer or shop staff using the QR Scan button at the bottom-right of the screen.
- When the scan succeeds, "🎁 Bonus Earned!" appears, showing the bonus name and the points earned (for example, +20 points).
:::note The scan button and where you can scan In events that use Bonus QR, the QR Scan button appears while playing a score-type course, even in events that are set not to use QR Code Punch. The button's position and basic usage are the same as in In-event controls.
Bonus QR can be scanned anywhere. Even when you are far from a spot set to "GPS + QR (both required)," you can tap the scan button at any time. A spot's punch QR can only be read when you are near it, but a Bonus QR can be read anywhere. :::
Earning rules
- Each Bonus QR is valid only once. If you scan a QR you have already earned, "You have already received this bonus." appears and it is not added twice. You can earn any number of different Bonus QR codes.
- Points earned once do not change later. Even if the organizer edits or deletes a Bonus QR's points or name, the points and display name you already earned remain as they were (the content at the moment you scanned is recorded as is).
- You can earn them offline, too. Even if you scan where there is no connection, the points are recorded and are uploaded automatically once the connection returns.
When you cannot scan
When you cannot scan a Bonus QR, the reason is shown on the screen. The main messages and what to do are as follows.
| Message shown | Cause and what to do |
|---|---|
| You haven't started yet. | You have not started playing yet. Scan after you start. |
| The start time hasn't arrived yet. | This is a mass-start category and it is before the start time. Scan once the time has passed. |
| Please resume before punching. | Your play is paused. Resume before scanning. |
| You have already received this bonus. | You have already scanned this Bonus QR. It is not added twice. |
| Bonus QR codes cannot be used on this course. | This is not a score-type course. See the table at the top of the page for eligible courses. |
| Bonus QR codes are not available in team events yet. | Bonus QR is for individual play only. |
| This QR code is for a different event. | This QR code is not for the event you are currently in. |
| Could not verify this QR code. | This QR code cannot be read as a Bonus QR. Check the presented code again. |
| This bonus QR code is not currently available. | The organizer has deleted that Bonus QR. It can no longer be scanned. |
Combo Bonus (points for combinations of checkpoints)
Combo Bonus is a mechanism where bonus points are added automatically when you visit at least a certain number of a specific combination of checkpoints that the organizer has designated. It is used to encourage things like conquering a difficult area or touring a specific area.
For example, out of seven designated checkpoints:
- Visit all seven for +100 points
- Visit six of the seven for +50 points
Points are awarded according to how many you visited (the threshold).
How to earn
No special action is needed. Just punch the target checkpoints as usual, and the bonus points are added automatically once you reach a condition (threshold). No on-screen notification appears when you achieve it, but the bonus you earned is reflected in your total score and ranking, and you can check it on the results screen.
Earning rules
- Only the points of the single highest threshold you reached are added; they are not cumulative (when reaching seven gives +100 points, the +50 points for six are not added on top — only +100 points are awarded).
- The target checkpoints have no special marking on the map in the play screen. Instead, a "Combo Bonus" tag and a list of the rule name, target checkpoints, and thresholds (for example, visit 7 for 100 points) appear on the category (course) screen before you start. You can check them here before you begin playing.
- A single course may have multiple Combo Bonus rules configured.
:::note Bonuses in Team Play Bonus QR is for individual play only and cannot be used in team competition categories. The team result does not show a "Bonus Points" row either. Combo Bonus, on the other hand, is valid in team competitions and is added to the team's total score and ranking. :::
Checking in results
The bonus points you earned appear in the score breakdown on the results screen after play ends. Each of the following rows appears only when there are points for it.
- Bonus Points — points earned via Bonus QR
- Combo Bonus — points earned through combinations of checkpoints
Tapping either row shows a breakdown. Bonus Points opens a list of the name, time earned, and points of each bonus you earned; Combo Bonus opens the "N / M CPs" and points earned for each rule you achieved (shown as a detail screen on iOS and a detail dialog on Android). You cannot tap them from the punch list shown during play.
:::note When the breakdown total does not match the score The score used for ranking is the one finalized at the moment you finished. If the organizer changes the Combo Bonus rules after the event ends, the breakdown is recalculated with the latest rules, so the breakdown total may not match the score above. In that case, a note is shown in the breakdown. :::
