Settings by Activity Type
In the Safety Tracking feature, you can change what participants and viewers see depending on the type of activity.
Basic idea
- In orienteering and rogaining, hiding the map and current location is often better for fairness
- In trail running and similar activities, letting participants confirm their own location can improve safety
Comparison of settings
| Use case | Participant current location map | Live map for all participants |
|---|---|---|
| Orienteering / Rogaining | Hidden | Hidden |
| Trail running and similar activities | Can be shown | Can be shared |
What changes when you change these settings?
Show participant current location on a map
- When OFF
- Participants cannot confirm their own current location on the map
- It is easier to preserve competition fairness
- When ON
- Participants can check their own location on the map
- This helps with navigation and safety, but in some competition styles it may be too advantageous
Share the live map with everyone
- When OFF
- Only organizers can see the location of all participants
- Supporters and other participants cannot see them
- When ON
- The live map can be shared for spectating or support
- You should also consider the effect on fairness and privacy
Recommended for orienteering
- Show participant current location on a map: OFF
- Share the live map with everyone: OFF
- Require Entry Number input: ON is recommended
This is the standard setting when competition fairness takes priority.
The organizer quick guide also uses this combination as the recommended setting for orienteering events.
Good use cases for this setting
- You do not want participants to see their current location during the competition
- Public live viewing for supporters is not necessary
- Overdue-return confirmation and SOS handling should be done only by the organizer side
Things to add in participant guidance
- It is normal that the participant screen does not show current location on the map
- Starting sharing and using SOS still work
- Participants need to perform the stop operation after finishing
Recommended for trail running
- Show participant current location on a map: ON
- Share the live map with everyone: turn ON if needed
- Require Entry Number input: decide based on your operation style
This is suitable when the activity assumes that participants will move while checking their own location.
Good use cases for this setting
- You want to prioritize participant-side safety confirmation
- You want supporters or staff to see shared locations
- Monitoring and operational efficiency are more important than competitive fairness
Cautions when deciding what to share
- If the live map is public, other participants and supporters can also see locations
- If participant current location is ON, self-location checking on the map becomes part of the activity
- When many first-time participants join, showing more information may make them feel safer
Decision points when unsure
- Whether fairness of competition is the top priority
- Whether participants should be allowed to check a map
- Whether supporters should be able to see the live map
- Whether many beginners are expected
Default direction when unsure
It is often easiest to decide with the following baseline.
- For orienteering or rogaining competitions
- Participant current location map: OFF
- Live map sharing: OFF
- For trail running or support-focused operation
- Participant current location map: ON
- Live map sharing: ON if needed
Before the real event, test both the organizer side and participant side so you can confirm how the participant screen actually looks with the chosen settings.
